What’s the difference between plastisol and nylon?

Plastisol is a PVC product, with a thicker, softer, rubber-like finish. It is known for its insulation properties as well as its ‘grip-like’ finish. Plastisol is man-made and available in an infinite amount of colors. Nylon is organic and is a powder based product. The finish is much harder, much thinner and is known for its low coefficient of friction.

 

What’s the difference between ecoat and aquence?

E-coat is an electrostatically charged process, where a current is required to bond the paint to the metal. A-coat is a wetting agent where parts are dipped into a paint, and a reaction rinse is used to bond the paint to the metal. E-coat will bond to a number of different metals whereas A-coat will only work with iron. And because A-coat cures at a much lower temperature, it works well with assemblies as the paint will not bond to any non-iron based bushings and will not affect the movement of the part. Also, because it is a paint, and not a powder, A-coat will cover the entire surface of the part, both inside (tubes for example) and out.

 

What size part can you plastisol dip?

Plastico has two carousel lines and two monorail lines for dipping parts into plastisol. Our carousels can manage parts up to about 20” square, no more than 14” deep. We literally have dozens of different tooling set-ups that allow us to load up our racks and coat thousands of parts per hour, depending of course on part geometry. Our smaller monorail line is quite specific in its tooling, however, we can comfortably coat parts up to 36” x 12”. Our newer plastisol line gives us the ability to coat parts that are 9.5’ x 7.5’ by no more than 24” deep.

 

What colors do you coat in?

A-coat is a black paint. The choice is either a matte or a semi-gloss finish. Nylon is available in a number of colors, however anything outside of black is considered a custom order, and a minimum amount of product is required on order. With nylon, unless the volumes are substantial, custom colors can be cost prohibitive.  Plastisol is made right here in house. We stock black, red, blue, white, yellow, gray and green. Just about any other color is available, however, note that a minimum amount of raw materials are required in order for us to make a custom color.

 

What is the average turn-around time?

For a first time coating, we ask for ten business days as this give us time to figure out the best way to get the product through our process. Once we have established that process, anywhere from three to seven days is typical.

 

What hours is shipping open?

Shipping hours are 6:30 to 4:30 Monday to Thursday. Closing at 3pm on Friday’s

 

Why am I paying a material surcharge???

The bulk of the products we use to make our plastisol, as well as the nylon that we bring in, comes from the United States. The raw materials are a commodity and the prices we pay continuously fluctuate. On top of that, the weakness of the Canadian dollar adds a significant amount to this expense. The only way for us to recoup some of these expenses is to use a material surcharge. Although the percentage is an amount of the piece price, the value is based exclusively on the materials, and not the process itself.

 

Are you a powder coater?

Nylon is a powder, however we are not a traditional powder coater. Typically when someone is looking for a powder coater, the requirement is often an epoxy based product.

 

What temperature will you coat my parts at?

Depending on the paint we are using (800 or 900 series), A-coat will cure at between 225 and 375 degrees F. Both nylon and plastisol will pre-heat and cure at varying temperatures depending on part geometry, weight, thickness and coating requirements. Curing temperatures will range between 375 and 510 degrees.

 

How do you determine price?

Pricing is based on pack density and of course, material usage. We determine how many parts we can process in an hour, and estimate how much material and how many bodies would be required to execute the job, then price it out accordingly.

 

Why am I paying a minimum charge?

Everything we do requires set-up time, which comes at an expense. We simply need to ensure we can cover that expense. The minimum is only charged if the volume of parts x the piece price does not exceed that minimum amount. Our customers are never charged both the piece price and the minimum charge.

 

Do you take ‘one-off’ jobs?

Absolutely! If it is something we can do, we’ll do it. Note we do have a minimum charge for each process.

 

Can we see our parts in process?

All processes throughout our facility are entirely proprietary and we do not allow our customers to see how we do what we do. We do however, allow our customers to tour our plant, to see the many options that are available in both coatings and in metal finishing.
